Fostering Game Development Skill Set With LevelUp@Schools

KUALA KRAI, Kelantan — Forest Interactive, a global tech company has officially kicked off its collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) for the 2018 LevelUp@Schools program. This joint effort marks the second time and two years in a row for Forest Interactive in endorsing MDEC’s on-going initiative with LevelUp@Schools.
LevelUp@Schools is an educational program created by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) with the support of the Ministry of Education of Malaysia (MOE) to extend exposure and forge game development skillsets to school students to learn ideation, creation, and completion of games. As a multifaceted tech company that understands the need for a platform that could spur the interest and nurture future talents in the highly progressive game industry, Forest Interactive has been working closely with MDEC in preparing the nation-wide agenda supporting the program in three different states for this year mainly Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, and Kuala Lumpur.
Acting as one of the main benefactors, Forest Interactive teamed up for its first 2018 LevelUp@Schools workshop conducted by MDEC at the Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) in Kuala Krai, Kelantan on 27thApril and 28th April. The two-day event comprised of a game development workshop joined by 30 high school students and 15 teachers from the Kelantan region. Together, 13 employees from Forest Interactive volunteered and participated in the event where the aims to share deeper insights into the industry and spark the students’ interest were met.

“We are glad to be a part of the LevelUp@Schools program. We chose to join and start our support for the program in Kelantan this year as we had a successful pilot run last year with the state. Furthermore, as Malaysia rises to be the fastest growing creative technology industry with the expected 689.2 million (USD) in game revenue for this year alone, we not only believe that this type of program is crucial to empower these students and tell them that there are many opportunities within the huge industry in the future, but we also believe that it’s important to reach out to them and provide them with the training so they could build and sharpen their skills to prepare them for what’s ahead.” Said Rizal Amir Ibrahim, Head of Technology Development in Forest Interactive.

Forest Interactive and MDEC will continue to carry out the program to two other education institutes in different states in July 2018: Nilai University, Negeri Sembilan and UniKL in Kuala Lumpur. In addition, to further grasp the students’ understanding and involvement throughout the initiative, Forest Interactive have arranged for a coding competition for all the students involved from the three states (Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur) to win a fun trip to Kuala Lumpur and get the chance to visit the company’s HQ.
